Rape Culture And Buffy: The Vampire Slayer

Rape Culture and Buffy:  The Vampire Slayer

As I’ve said before, I’m a huge fan of Buffy and Angel and as such have been doing a lot of analysis of late.  One thing that’s been worrying me larely that’s been a disturbing trend of late.  The obvious use of “rape culture” in Buffy.

Before I have rabid fans with torches and pitchforks come beat down my door and burn me at the stake, let me explain.  I’m not trying to cause trouble, just pointing out what I’ve seen and other fans have gotten me to notice over the years, so without further ado…

1.Xander (The Pack)

A.In the season one episode of The Pack Xander trying to get to break up a bullying incident gets possesed by demon hyenas.  As a result he gets mean and nasty along with his new “friends”.  Xander on his own tears down his childhood friend, Willow and attempts to rape the heroine and his failed love interest (not at this time) Buffy.  Buffy of course doesn’t put up with his antics and knocks him out by hitting him with a desk.  This is the first blatant incident of sexual assault in the show.

2.Larry (Phases)

A.In this episode we learn that Willow’s new boyfriend Oz is a werewolf, but in one scene, the closeted gay guy in the school, Larry is generally acting like a jerk towards all females, but in gym class he tries to feel up Buffy’s ass in self defense class.  Again, it doesn’t end well for the guy trying to get the better of our heroine, as Larry ends up eating mat.  Second sexual assult in the show.

3.Xander again (Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered)

A.Things aren’t going well for the normal couple on the show at this point (Xander and Cordelia).  Peer pressure from Harmony and her former friends causes Cordelia to break up with Xander on Valentine’s Day (OUCH!).  In a rage Xander blackmails the teen witch Amy to cast a love spell on Cordelia.  That’s bad enough, but when it’s cast it turns out that Cordelia is the only one not affected, but every female including Drucilla the vampire are looking to make Xander “their cuddle monkey”.  While Xander has the personal strength to not take advantage of any of his female friends who come on to him, this is a kind of sexual assault.  He does (inadvertantly) take away the free will of every woman in town, thus it is assault. So, sexual assault 3.

4.Faith (Season 3 and Who are you {Season 4})

A.Not a popular opinion for some at first, but Faith did rape Xander not once but twice in season three.  Once was in the heat of the moment in The Zeppo, and again when she joined the mayor in the episode Consequences and she nearly killed him.  Also let’s not forget the body switch episode in season 4 Who are you where Faith in Buffy’s body rapes Buffy’s boyfriend Riley.  Sexual assaults 4-6.

5.Willow (Season 6)

A.When Willow, when going through her addiction to magick and power storyline casts a spell on her girlfriend to make her forget an argument.  Sexual assault 7

6.Spike/William (Season 6)

A.In Seeing Red one of the hardest episodes IMO to watch, Spike, Buffy’s vampire ally and “love interest” tries to rape Buffy when he snaps after years of abuse by her hands (not excusing, just stating the storyline).  He’s so horrified he runs off and gets a soul to make up for it. Sexual assault 8

That’s the ones I remember, but the biggest disturbing trend I’ve found is that rarely are the two women who’ve commited sexual assault villified for doing what they’ve done, but men get all the hate.  That really needs to stop.  It doesn’t help anyone to separate the two genders who are equally guilty.  Just my humble opinion.

I love her.

You’ve seen my posts, you know who I’m talking about.   From that little prison cell she has locked my heart.   T’Keya has my heart and I can’t wait to have her for real.   I love her so much and I will never let her go.

In defense of Dawn Summers

In Defense of Dawn Summers

Okay, this is for the benefit of everyone in the Buffy:  The Vampire Slayer and I Love Dawn Summers Facebook groups.  I am a huge fan of Buffy and it’s spin-off series (to a lesser degree) Angel.  I love all the characters in both shows, but there is one thing that mystifies me to this day.  The irrational hatred of Buffy’s younger sister Dawn.  If this sounds like I’m writing a school paper, I apologize, but I intend to go point by point with this document over why she’s hated and why the reasons are invalid.

1.She’s annoying, whiny, a brat, etc…

A.Okay, at the beginning, I agree with you all, she is (get out, get out, GET OUT!!!), but get this, so were you.  Four years ago an entire generation of teens tuned into “Welcome to the Hellmouth/The Harvest”.  Those teens grew up into college students, and the next generation of teens needed a gateway character.  Enter Dawn Summers, an annoying younger sibling that shows very rightly how hard it is to have a superhero in your family

2.She’s always getting into trouble.

A.True, and again didn’t we all cause some trouble just to get our families to notice us?  I know I did. (”Dawn’s in trouble, must be Thursday”)

3.“She killed Joyce”

A.No, no she didn’t, even show runner Joss Wheadon has come out to say that Joyce died of natural causes as she was written to.

4.She should have sacrificed herself in season 5.

A.Maybe, but she was added by Joss for a very specific reason, “to give Buffy someone to care about that wasn’t a love interest”.  Hence the story went the way it was meant to.

5.Why are Xander and she together?  That’s so gross and out of the blue.

A.Not necessarily, at best Dawn is only four years younger than Xander, and as for the out of the blue part, watch the episode in season 7 where Dawn thinks she’s a potential slayer.  When she finds out she isn’t, she’s devestaded, but Xander tells her she’s extrodinary.  That’s the seed of their relationship.  Also, let’s not forget that they were the only ones they could talk to their problems about in the comics.  It was inevitable.

That’s only a little bit of my feelings on the subject of Dawn.  It seems to me that people who can’t stand her are stuck on season 5.  She grows up, maybe you need to give her more of a chance.

It’ll never be enough

I say it every day, I mean it every time.

I say that I love you, and glad you’re mine.

I say I want and need you every day,

But useless are these words that I say.

It’ll never be enough I know it’s that way

So soon I’ll show you that my love shines like brightest day.

I love you so, and you’ll say you know,

But I’ll never tire of telling you so.

I try to keep telling myself

That I deserve this woman.  This is the woman that rejuvenated my heart after the heartless bitch I was with before nearly destroyed it.   This is the woman I met because of a pen pal site for inmates.   I’m so lucky to have her, she is my angel.   Whenever we talk on the phone it’s like the voice of the sweetest song.   I love her and she will be mine forever.   I love you my sweet angel.

A poem

Not the best I’ll admit at this, but here goes, the subject being hearing my baby’s voice for the first time this week.

Her voice

A voice so sweet on the line

I can’t believe her voice is mine

Months of tag on the phone

Made me feel a little alone

But one summer day

My phone ringing away

Brought her angelic voice near

To fall on this undeserving ear

I love you so

I thought I’d let you know

That I’m glad you’re forever mine.

Well it happened again

And this time it’s a good thing.   I know I didn’t get into it earlier,  but my girl T’Keya is in jail in Nevada does minor issue and as such is three hours behind me, so she tried to call me at 6PM her time.  If you do the math, you can guess what happened.   I was working, so I couldn’t answer her call.   However that was fixed by the event that happened at 9:30 this morning.   She called me again, and hearing her voice again was just as sweet this time as it was the first time two days ago.   Come next August we’ll be together forever babe, and I can’t wait my sexy dark skinned angel.   I love you.   Can’t wait to hear from you again.
